  1. 1. I think it was both because it was a genuine gesture because the people of the government wanted to let people to know that the constitution hasn’t been forgotten but it was a political stunt because there is no reason they should have read the whole thing they should have only read the most important parts.
    2. The cartoon the elephant carrying the box saying this piece of junk isn’t going to work is like the republicans in the class reading that don’t believe that the government should take care of people that people should take care of themselves. Also the guy behind the window saying you might’ve tried opening it is the democrat in the class reading that believes that they should at least try to see if the healthcare reform will work and not shoot the idea down so fast without even trying it.

  2. I think that the cartoon means that one party in the government thinks that the health reform won't work. On the other hand the other party that wanted the reform to pass is arguing with the party that didn't want it to pass asking how they would know if the reform would work or not if they didn't even try it out.
I feel that the reading of the Constitution on the House floor was a genuine gesture. Because, the only reason why it was read out loud was to remind people that the Constitution is really important and that no one is disregarding it or thinks that it is not important. In the video he says that reading the Constitution out loud gave the tea party activists hope that the Government is still sticking with the original idea of the Government.

  3. Reading the Constitution on the House floor was a genuine gesture. Many Americans have forgotten what the Constitution really says. They just know that the Constitution protects their rights. Reading the Constitution on the House floor allowed the people that represents us to gain a better understanding of what the Americans want, since the Constitution is not open to interpretation.
In the cartoon the elephant are the Republicans and the person at the desk are the Democrats. The cartoon is saying that the republicans have said that the Health Reform bill does not work and they hope to repeal it, but the Democrats are trying to convince the Republicans that they should give it a chance and not try to repeal it.

  4. I believe that the reading of the constitution on the house floor was a genuine gesture more than a political stunt. The reason I think they did it was to remind of the nations base rules and what we were founded by meaning we were founded to be a free nation ruled by the people not the government. They might have done this to get more votes in the house even when it is mostly republicans it didn’t hurt the democratic views.
2.That the republicans want to keep a small government and that the people can take care of themselves, so the health care reform is just a waste in time and money to them. The democrats want the republicans that the health care reform will work if you try it out for a little while. Neither side will be able to past a repel on the bill unless both sides can see a neutral understanding.

  5. I think that this man only read the constitution for two hours for political power and don’t think it really came from his heart to read, because they also made booklets that means they were trying to advertise the constitution to all the people. I also think that no one is just going to stand up front and read for two hours only for a very good reason, for example: money, political power who knows. On the other hand about the picture republicans are trying to show that health care is just a waste of time and money that everyone should pay and take care of them. That the government should just worry about his self and not the other people, but democrats think the opposite way for example the thing that all citizens should have the right to obtain health care, and not repeal this great idea of health care.

  6. 1) I think this is what the man said in the video, a bit of both. Both a political stunt and genuine gesture. They are trying to get the attention of the more conservative Republicans and trying to stop them from protesting. It also may be a genuine thing because they wanted to show that the Constitution has not been forgotten.
    2) The comments in the comic were symbolizing the Republicans saying that they don’t think the health reform is going to work. And that they think they can’t just get rid of it like a non-working piece of junk.

  7. I think that the reading of the constitution was a political stunt because it wasn’t a relevant thing to do in the House of Representatives. Also I feel that it was not necessary to read all of those words they should only read parts that pertained to our certain situation. As for the cartoon I think it meant something like what we have now for the health care bill and that is the elephant representing the republicans trying to repeal the health care bill. The little man in the window is presenting the democrat telling them to not repeal it.

  8. 1.) I believe that what the Republicans did was not a stunt, but rather it was a genuine gesture. I don’t see why people would think it was a stunt, for the constitution was one of the most important things that put our government into action. I believe that what the republicans did was actually a smart thing to do, for it is reminding the people of what our great nation is about and what the rules are and should still be. Republicans also wanted to remind the Democrats that they should stick with what the constitution says and not try to change it up and do more to it. It could also have been an act to show the democrats that they are not going to create any laws that are going to change or increase the laws and principles of the government; rather they need to hold back and keep what the constitution first had written the same. I also believe they wrote this in order to give the tea party a sign of hope. Because not many people like the tea party act, by doing an act like this it gave the tea party a sense of hope and courage to let them know that they are doing the right thing and they should keep doing what they are doing. Even if it was a little long and kind of unnecessary it still seemed like a good way to remind us of what our nation is about and what the original rules and principles are that we should follow.
2.) I believe that the cartoon portrays the Republicans idea on what they think about the health care bill. They think that the bill is just a big waste of money that will not help improve our country in any circumstances. They believe it will just create lots of chaos in our country to be even in more debt than we are in already. On the other hand Democrats are frustrated with the Republicans because they don’t even think that the Republicans are giving them a chance. They think the Republicans should at least try to work with it before they just go and flat out say no. The elephant represents the Republicans who just want to repeal the bill without even giving it a chance and the man in the booth represents the Democrats who believe the Republicans are being unfair by not even giving them a chance.

  9. I feel that the reading of the Constitution was more of a political stunt than a legitimate gesture because it had the effect of trying to stall protests by the Tea Party and other exremist Republican groups.
"This piece of junk doesn't work!!!" represents the Republican views of the healthcare bill. Most of them want to repeal it beacuse they believe people should be almost entirely self-sufficient.
The Democrat's quote represents the fact that many Democrats still support President Obama. They don't want the bill to be repealed because they believe it will do lots of good and want the Republicans to give it a chance.

  10. By listening to the Constitution on the House Floor I feel as though the Republicans are indeed a genuine gesture and a political stunt. It was a genuine for the reason that the Republicans were reading the Constitution only to remind people what the Constitution really says. Some people interpret the Constitution and they like to look more into it, but the Constitution is not suppose to be interpreted it should be strictly read how it is. I don’t think the Republicans should try to drill the constitution into people’s heads. I think they read the constitution to try to get ahead in the political race for power. I don’t think a person would stand and read the Constitution for two hours just because he wants to remind people, I think they were trying to imply that you should be a republican and follow us and things like that. As far as the cartoon the Republicans are basically saying that the health care bill isn’t going to work when they didn’t even take a chance to believe in it. They don’t know what is to come in the future. I think the Democrats were saying that maybe if you open it our try it for once you will see the good that will come out of the health care, even if you’re having trouble with it at first.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It was both. It was a stunt to get tea party activists to believe they haven't forgotton about them and it was real because they do want a smaller government. Besides the whole country is founded on the constitution so they want to remember what it says and use it to gain support.

The cartoon means people are so quick to say that the health care reform doesn't help and that it is bogus, but they haven't given it a chance. They are saying this because that is what they heard or that is what they think based on how little they know about it or how it looks from the outside, but until they get a real understanding of it or see it in action they shouldn't throw it out.

  12. 1. Reading the constitution was a genuine gesture, not a stunt. By reading it, the government was telling the people what the constitution said in the first place, in case there was any misunderstanding. Some people weren't fully understanding what it stated. By reading all of it out loud, the government tried to make those who didn't understand it finally understand it.
    2. The health care reform is something that looks good, but isn't meant to be used. Its like having an enormous box under your Christmas tree, then opening it and finding a Matchbox car. It is better off unopened. It looks good, but doesnt work good.

  13. 1. Reading the constitution was a kind of smart allic thing to do but also a good thing too. I believe this becuase it shows what the constitution was really about and let everybody in the hous to hear the whole thing aloud.

    2. I beleive that the healthcare bill is a big subject right now and there are different feelings and opinions about it. Everyday people could use the bill for medical reason and other problems but the finance companies dont like it because of the cash amount the bill would take.

  14. 1.I think that it was more of a political stunt than a genuine gesture. If they wanted to remind people that the Constitution had not been forgotten they could have done it in a speech and made references to all the key points in the Constitution. The idea of reading the Constitution out loud for two hours is, in reality, a bit excessive. I think that the reading of the Constitution was a political stunt to gain the support of the tea party. This could very well be true seeing as it was mentioned in the video that it was read to inform the tea party that the Constitution had not been forgotten.
    2. I think the political cartoon is illustrating the debate between the republicans and the democrats over whether or not the health care bill will work. The use of an elephant as the character "returning" the health care bill unopened illustrates the republicans refusal to even try the bill. The worker incharge of returns is saying that if you don't "open" or try the idea then you will have no way of knowing whether it will work. You can't decide whether or not something will work if you don't give it a chance. This is an obvious illustration of the different political parties differing stances on the health care bill.

  15. 1) The reading of the constitution was a genuine act of politics as this is what our country was founded upon. The reason the constitution was read on the House floor was to remind America that politicians plan to remember what our government was based on. In addition, this was informative as many American citizens do not even know what the Constitution says; they simply know it holds their rights.
    2) The cartoon resembles Republicans vs. democrats on the health care bill being repealed or not. The Republicans are resembled by the elephant, the person at the desk stands for the Democrats, and the gift is the health care bill. The republican is claiming the health care bill does not work and it should be repealed, but they have to given it a chance to do its job. The Democrat is telling the republican to open the gift before he says it does not work.

  16. 1.) I feel that reading the Constitution on the Housen floor was a political stunt. I say this because i belive that the republican party would like more support for a bigger government because many people dont want a bigger government. Also the I believe that they want to show the Democratic party that they are going to something different and that they care more about the Constitution than the Democratic party.

2.) The cartoon shows that the republican (elephant)party doesent want the health reform because they believe that the reform wont work. And the Democratic (donkey) party believes that the Republicans are taking the easy way out by tring to debate that it wont work and they should not even try using it.

  17. The reading of the constitution on the house floor is quite obviously a political stunt. Someone who was serious about their positions as a politician would not have read something that took two hours to read. It seems like this stunt was more to get attention than to prove a point. It was completely unnecessary, and it's clear that this action was not for the importance of the Constitution. If they really cared about the importance of this document, they could have shown it through a speech about how people should take an interest in it or a concise speech demonstrating their views. I think a better use of time would have been to focus on important current issues rather than on a document that is already well known. As for the political cartoon, it shows how the Republicans want to repeal the health reform while the Democrats want to give it a try.

  18. 1)I feel that reading the Constitution on the House floor was a genuine gesture. I think that because the man said, that the Republican Party read it to the tea party to remind them that the constitution hasn’t been forgotten. Or they could have done it to prove to the democrat party that they were going to do stuff differently.
2)I think the picture means that, the republican party doesn’t think that the health reform will work, and they think its just junk, and the democratic party is saying that they should give it a try and see if it works instead of just judging it first.

  19. By reading out the ENTIRE Constitution, I really do think that it is out of genuine respect for it, and that they believe it's an very important document. I mean, why would they take the time to do that to gain political momentum. It just doesn't make sense...I think another reason behind reading it, it's constantly reminding people how the Constitution goes- and, that it isn't open for interpretation.
And on the subject of the political cartoon; I think it's trying to say something along the lines of, Republicans aren't giving the Health Care Reform enough time to cycle around and work.

  20. I think that reading the Constitution on the House Floor was a genuine gesture and a great idea. By them reading that was an idea for them to show the other people how important it is. Reading on the House Floor also gives people a refreshing on what is stated in it. Apparently for Bainor to read all 4,545 words, he believes that the Constitution is very important. The reading of this document was to remind the republicans that the Tea Party has not been forgotten. The cartoon shows me that the Health Reform is not working for the man holding the gift, which I think are the Republicans. They don’t want to try to make it work and they really don’t care. The Democratic is saying open it and see. In other words stop complaining about something you don’t works or not. The Republicans believe that people should take care of themselves.

  21. 1. I think that reading the Constitution on the Houst floor is absolutely a political stunt. One reason is because you don't waste two hours reading more than four thousand words just as a "genuine gesture". Most of the House already knows what the basics/importance of the Constitution is and by reading it the Republicans just wanted to gain tea party's support. They needed the tea party's support in order to get more support for the things that the Republicans wanted to change. The Republican's wanted to basically say that the Democrats didn't care about the Constitution as well. The publicity would certainly help them gain support to pass what they think is needed. I also think the Republicans did this to maintain their glory now that they are the majority of the House.
    2. The Republicans do not want health care reform as shown in the cartoon and yesterday's article. Yet, Democrats strongly believe we should give the health care reform a shot because many lives depend on it. The Republican in the cartoon saying it won't work is symbolic of the House's Republicans deciding to repeal the bill because it is a bad idea. The Democrat saying give the health care reform a try is symbolic of the House's Democrats trying to launch the health care reform. Both parties are committed to staying true to their word. It is clear (based on the article and the cartoon) that both do not agree on the reform.

  22. 1) I feel that the reading of the constitution on the House floor was both a genuine gesture, and a political stunt. It was a genuine gesture because I think that the Republicans are just trying to remind people of how important the constitution is and that we still need to live up to our Constitutional Amendments. However, I also feel that the reading of the constitution was a political stunt because I just don’t see why someone would stand up there for 2 hours and read a 4,543 word constitution, but I am more on the genuine gesture side rather than the political stunt side.

    2) The cartoon relates to the article from yesterday because just like in the article the cartoon is showing how the republicans want to repeal the healthcare bill, and the democrats are saying “hey let’s give it a try.”

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1) I think that the reading of the Constitution was a genuine gesture. The reason for this thought is that reading the Constitution will help the people to remember what the Constitution stands for and means. Also, reading the Constitution in the exact way it was written will tell what it truly means and not what other people interpret it to be.

    2) The cartoon relates to the issues discussed in class in multiple ways. The elephant carrying the Health Reform "present" represents the Republican party saying that the reform is foolish and isn't needed. Uncle Sam (Behind the returns counter) stands for Americans or Democrats saying that the Republicans could give it a chance and that it could be good for the United States.

  24. 1. I think that the reading of the Constitution on the House floor was a mostly a political stunt. I say mostly because I think that the idea was genuine until people started making such a big deal out of it. I think that it was good that they read the Constitution on the House floor because it gave people a chance to refresh their memory of this important document and try and follow it. One reason the it was a political stunt was that the people on the House floor were trying to get attention in telling a party that they weren’t doing something right.
    2. This cartoon is showing that people just don’t like the idea of having the healthcare bill being passed and don’t want to give the bill a try. They think that it will do more bad than good in the economical sense of the bill.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. Reading the constitution in the house was genuine, yet it was largely a political stunt. Reading it like that won support from the tea party movement, and demonstrated to the public that they promised to uphold the constitution. They had expected this to make them more popular both in the house and to voters. They may have meant what they said, but it was mostly to make them look good.

    2. The elephant attempting to return the package shows the eagerness of the Republicans to repeal the healthcare bill demonstrated by the large package they are holding. The figure behind the returns counter likely represents Democrats suggesting that they give the bill a chance before repealing it so quickly .

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. When they read the constitution out loud on the house floor was a good thing because maybe that reminded them the actual words of the constitution that they may have for gotton over time. I think this was a genuin act because they are reminding people they havent forgotton or if they have that this will refresh the memorys and hopefully make them relize what America ust to be instead of what it is today.
    2. The cartoon was linked back to the radio conversation because they bothed had the ideas of healthcare. What i seen in the cartoon was a republican going agienst the idea of this new health care bill and the democrate telling republicans to give it a try before going agienst it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. (1). I think it was more of a political stunt. It was so because they didn’t want to forget about the Tea Party group. Also I believe that they should of have read the highlights of the Constitution rather than reading the whole 4543 word document.
(2). It both were concerning about healthcare issues. People, such as the Republicans, don’t concern about healthcare that much. Well they do want healthcare, but they believe that the Americans should get healthcare themselves rather than the government giving it to them. So it’s going to be hard to past this bill. So they sort off “return” the item back, as shown on the cartoon picture.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1.I believe that the reading of the constitution was a genuine gesture. The reason being is that the republicans are trying to show that even though they feel the government basically shouldn’t run everything. I mean come on they carried pocket sizes of the constitution. Even though the constitution is 4543 words, the republicans are very strict in saying that what the constitution says is really what should happen with the way things in the states are ran. The reason I feel this part is so weird is because even the government doesn’t always abide by the terms of the constitution it seems that they are bending something’s that could be either serious or not that serious at all but they are still bending the rules which shouldn’t be happening. This is how I could see that the Republicans are right on a viewpoint of how they go “small government” instead of “large government”.
    2. The comic is supposed to represent the Republicans and the Democrats. The elephant is representing the republicans, whereas the man in the return box or office is a Democrat. I think they are trying to tell the Democrats that even though the Health Care reform will help people out with insurance and things of that nature, it would not be worth all the money that would have to be taxed to the people in order to just get more health care, they might as well just pay all the money on the doctors bill. However the Democrats are trying to tell the Republicans that if they give the Health care reform a chance that they will be surprised at how much people benefit from the changes made.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I personally feel the reading of the Constitution on the House floor was a political stunt to get them extra attention. Most people at the House already know what the Constitution is about and what it says, so why waste the time reading all 4000+ words? I think just reading the important things from it would’ve been better.
The elephant saying “This piece of junk doesn’t work!!!” is representing the Republicans and their view of the health care reform. They feel it should be canceled/repealed which would explain why it is taking the present to the return window. The guy at the return window saying “You might’ve opened it…” is representing the Democrats saying the Republicans should have at least looked at the health care bill before deciding it was useless.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I feel that the reading of the Constitution on the House floor was more of a political stunt. It was a political stunt because they know that nobody is against the constitution so they would be interested to hear the constitution. Most people are already informed about the information and they would be wasting everybody’s two hours on reading the 4543 words. Just like the video said to reinsure that the tea party hasn’t been forgotten, I’m pretty sure that many people hasn’t forgotten about the tea party and it was just for show. They knew that if they reading the constitution would grab people attention for the Tea party and possible more people would be on their side. Once again reading the constitution on the house floor was most definitely a political stunt not only for trying to show off, but also convince the democrats to be on the same page as them so that they would be successful in having the rules passed that they wanted to be passes.
The cartoon in representing the Democrats and the Republicans. The republican is the elephant and the democratic is the elf. The republican is saying that it isn’t worth spending billions of dollars on the Health reform because it isn’t going to be worth it in the end. The elf which is the democrat is saying that if the elf at least give it a try, it more than likely will have a huge success and many people will benefit from the health reform.

  31. 1.
I think it was a genuine routine because of the New Year. Republicans think that the constitution should be read again, to keep the government focused on finding a way to get unemployment numbers down. It wasn’t only read allowed by the republican party but all of the government heard it.

    2.
The first Uncle Sam says that the new healthcare reform is not working. To translate it isn't working at putting our economy back on track. The second Uncle Sam says that he should open the reform before returning it. This means that the first Uncle Sam hasn't given the reform the chance to start working. The first Uncle Sam stands for the Republican Party. The second Uncle Sam stands for the Democratic Party.

  32. I feel like the reading of the constitution was a publicity stunt. Every member already knows the constitution and for them to read it for 2 is not ideal to me. It’s quite obvious this was not for the constitutions sake. They probably did this to show democrats they are serious and want more support. They could have showed the importance of the constitution in many other ways. If the council members truly needed to prove a point they could have gone about it in better ways than spending 2hours reading a paper no one can focus that long a fully take in what’s being said. For the cartoon it is symbolizing republicans wanting to remove the health reform bill and feeling like it’s going to cause many problems. While democrats want to go ahead with the health reform bill.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1.)I feel that it was a political stunt to read the Constitution on the House floor. The gesture will take up a lot of time and nobody will listen to the words for 2 hours straight. Reading 4,500 words from a document written so long ago as a document that should be taken literally in not realistic. The political purpose is to have the Tea Party remain confident in them because the Republicans got a lot of help from the Tea Party.
    2) The wrapped gift represents Health Care Reform that was passed by the Democrats. The Republicans want to repel the bill without seeing whether it will work or not. The Republicans, represented by the elephant, is carrying the box and the expression on his face makes the box seem heavy. The man in the window said the elephant should have opened the gift before saying it doesn’t work. If the Democrats didn’t want the bill returned, the sign should have read “No returns .“

    ReplyDelete
  34. I believe the reading of the Constitution was a genuine act. It is very important to be reminded every once and a while about the constitution and the importance of it. By making little booklets for reading out at important political events people will begin to have a better understanding of the constitution and how it affects them.
The comic strip shows the Republicans trying to dispose of the Health Care Reform Bill, because they believe it won’t work. The Democrats were saying that they should have looked at the Bill with more detail and then decide whether to discard it or pass it. It shows that Democrats really believe we have the money and time to go through with the bill and Republicans don't agree.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1.I think that the reading of the constitution on the house floor was more of a stunt, but not completely. There isn't any reason to sit in a crowded room for two hours listening to a document that everyone in the room has already read. It's more for show and to prove a point than to remind people about how strict the constitution is. If they wanted to remind the congress about this issue, they could have just sent out a memo, an announcement, or a meeting. This would have been far more productive than reading the constitution out loud for two solid hours. There isn't any reason NOT to do it, but it's just not a productive way to prove their point.
2.The comic probably means that people are getting worried about the healthcare bill without waiting to see how it affects the country. The size of the box might represent how intimidated some people are and think that it the change is too big. When the other character tells the elephant to try opening the box, it means that he is telling him to wait and see what will happen before getting worried.

  36. The following video that we saw was about how the Republicans had read the Constitution during the Midterm Election was i feel a Constitution stunt. Due to fact that they copied the Consitution into smaller versions, i think this is a way of advertising to have more polical sopport. The polical support they well get from this was more people to go with the Republicans which helped them become the majority of the House of Representative. I think the cartoon symbolizes that the Republicans want to repeal the bill and the Democratics are saying they didnt even let the bill come into affect.

  37. 1.) I think that the reading of the constitution on the house floor was a genuine gesture because the republicans wanted to remind the tea party that they haven’t forgotten about them and that the government shouldn’t be able to have the constitution open for interpretation. Plus, what is wrong with a little reminder of what our country is about?
2.) In the cartoon, the democrats are handing the health reform back over, trying to repeal it, but they haven’t given the health reform a chance to prove that it works. The Republicans are saying that they should give it a chance before they pre-judge and try to reform it. This goes with what the article we read yesterday because they were talking about how the health reform was the big talk of the year, and it still should be.

  38. 1.I think that reading the Constitution on the House floor is a genuine gesture. It is a way to show that the Constitution is still intact followed, and not subject to change. Even though they could have taken a diffrent approach towards the situation, reading the entire thing is kind of overboard to some.
2.I think the cartoon illustrates how the Republicans represented by the elephant are ready to end or repeal the Health Reform which is represented by the wrapped gift before its even put to use. The Democrats illustrated as the man in the retuns booth are simply suggesting that they should try it out instead of revoking it.

The reading of the constitution was a genuine gesture by the Republican party rather than a political stunt. The republicans were just trying to get a point by, by reading the constitution and to reassure the people that they were still abiding by what the constitution said. The constitution was the most important document written in our history and the republicans were showing that.

In the cartoon the republicans are returning the health reform entailing that they think it doesn’t work. Although you don’t see the box had been opened meaning they haven’t given it a chance yet to work. The Democrats are saying you open it meaning give it a chance and keep it for awhile and give it a chance to actually kick in, or see sum change.

  40. 1. I feel that reading the Constitution in the House is a genuine gesture because as they said the Republicans are not against the Constitution and are trying to ease the tea parties worries.
    2. The present in question represents the Health Reform and the man carrying it is saying that it dosent work. this states that with all the problems andissues that we would have to go through to make it happen are to much and it dosent work. However the man at the desk says have u tried opening it? Which would mean that we havent even tried to get it into motion, so do we know it wont work?

  41. 1. I feel that reading the Constitution was a political stunt more so than a genuine gesture. The man did not say (or I did not catch) what it would mean by a genuine gesture so I am more inclined to say that it was a stunt of politics. The tea party leans more towards the Republican Party and they are strict with the Constitution. The very reciting of the documents makes me believe that there was something in the Constitution that conflicted (in their opinions) with something that was being discussed. It was more of a political stunt than a genuine gesture.

    2. The cartoon is simple to understand. It basically means that the Republican Party is trying to reject what the Democratic Party considers as a gift and that they have not given it a chance to see if it will work as promised. The cartoon relates to the article because the main topic is the health reform that the President has been trying to pass. It has not been passed because of the ‘back and forth’ between the political parties. The tea party has been adamant about not passing it while the left side of politics wants the opposite. It is a constant battle that has yet to be resolved.

  42. The reading of the constitution of the political party was to me a political stunt. I said this because the Republican Party is notorious for being very conservative and strongly believe in the constitution. America is run off the constitution, so what would be the point of the Republican Party reading it? In the results of the midterm elections the majority of the wins were to the Republicans so they are showing their power and putting their beliefs into action by reading it aloud. So with the house being mostly Republican Party President Obama will have a hard time passing new bills, which is what the cartoon was depicting to me because of the Health Care Reform bill was to be repealed by the House.

I think that the reading of the Constitution on the House floor is more of a political stunt then a genuine gesture. During the video Chris Cillizza says that the Republican Party reads the Constitution, so the Tea party does not feel like their rights are being forgotten nor ignored. Then again I guess it would be a genuine gesture. By reading the Constitution on the House floors the Republicans to instill confidence in the very people who put them in office.

    2)
In my group yesterday, we discussed that the Health Form was something that was heavily needed. Now in this cartoon, you have a Republican trying to return the Health Reform because he believes it doesn’t work. The whole scenario reminds me of having a bike, and saying the bike doesn’t work before you have even gotten on the bike to ride it. On the Democrat side, in the cartoon if the republicans had just opened the health reform it would have worked. Just like the bike example, if you got on a bike a pedaled it would work, but you have to have the will power to make it work.

  44. I think the reading of the constitution on the house floor was a political stunt because it was not done until after the tea party started rallying. The tea party believes that the constitution is a strict rule not to be changed or reworded to suit the individual need. So, I think the House read it to review and put on a show of refreshing their memories right before the election to win votes and stay in power. But, it may have been a true thing for all we know but the fact that it was right before elections and after the tea party started talking constitution makes me think it was just a stunt.

This cartoon relates to the in class reading perfectly because health care reform was one of the big issues discussed. In the cartoon an elephant, otherwise known as a republican, says “This piece of junk doesn’t work!!!” Then Sam, the symbol for America, says “You might’ve tried opening it….” This cartoon is discussing how most republicans are opposing the health care bill while people are looking at them and saying, “Have u even looked at it yet before denying it?”

Reading the Constitution on the House Floor / Health Care Reform Bill Cartoon
    1) Do you feel that reading the Constitution on the House Floor was a genuine gesture or political stunt?
I feel that it could be a combined effort, the reading could be for people to better understand what the Constitution says and to make sure no one has forgotten what the Constitution says because of the multiple campaigns skewing the original view; while it could also be a case of calling out for attention, this could be a ploy to get support from the people on the House Floor and others that watch the House’s choices carefully. He says in the video that the reading would take at least two hours so it has to be something that is important to the House.

    2) Using the Cartoon you were given in class, relate the issues presented to your in-class reading from yesterday.
The political cartoon shows a Republican trying to “return” the Health Care Form without “opening it”. This relates to the article from yesterday by showing how not all of the political parties are supportive of Obama’s Health Care Reform. The Democratic Party is supportive of the Reform while the Republicans do not support the bill and that they do not even have an open mind towards the new Health Care Reform.

  46. 1.) After watching the short video about the Constitution being read on the house floor, I believe that it was a genuine gesture as long as a political stunt. Reading the Constitution on the house floor was gestures to the house, to some what refresh the members of the house on the Constitution. Also reading the Constitution out loud, made it better understood by those who didn’t fully understand. This event was also a political stunt, because it told the tea party activates that they had not been forgotten and made them self’s visible.

2.) The cartoon relates to the article our class read yesterday, because they both have to do with health care. Illustrated in the cartoon is a republican carrying a box labeled health reform saying its not going to work, but democrat responds give it a chance. The democrats want republicans to give the health reform a chance and not automatically have a negative outlook in it.

  47. 1) I feel that reading the Constitution on the House floor was both a political stunt and a genuine gesture. The Republicans want to reassure the members of the tea party and those who follow their views that America is still governed by the Constitution. Reading the Constitution on the House floor will demonstrate how the Republicans plan to run their term. I think this is meant to bring more attention to the Constitution because many Americans don’t know what is written in it and to reassure many people that America is starting to return to our roots. The Republicans probably want to educate the people on what is in the Constitution but also it makes them look good by showing how they support our country.

    2) “This piece of junk doesn’t work” is meant to show how Republicans have been rejecting the health care reform. Many people rejected the reform so strongly that they formed the tea party. “You might’ve tried opening it..” is to show Democrats frustrations with Republicans not being open to considering the reform. Many people are angry that the health care bill is taking so long to get passed. Republicans and Democrats have been having a back and forth over the bill and few agreements have been reached. Obama is taking a lot of heat for this as was discussed in the article from yesterday.

  48. 1. I believe that the reading the Constitution on the house floor is both a genuine gesture and a political stunt. I believe the Republicans wanted to read the Constitution out loud so that could outwardly show their affection to our country. In the video Chris Cillizza says before the election pocket versions of the Constitution became staples in Tea Party rallies, the reading of the Constitution helps Republicans know that it hasn’t been forgotten. I believe that is a sincere gesture. But I also believe that reading the Constitution out loud on the house floor is a political stunt because it may help Republicans gain an upper hand because of their outward display of love for their country.
    2. The health reform cartoon relates to yesterday’s in-class reading because it shows America’s unwillingness to even give the reform a try. People were trashing the idea of it before it had even been passed. The cartoon shows an unopened present wanting to be returned. This cartoon is a perfect way to display the actions of those Americans that refused to give the health reform a try.

  49. I feel that the reading if the Constitution on the House floor was a political stunt. I understand the symbolization of reminding the people that the key concepts of this country still matter but I believe that Republicans are looking for more of an “upper hand” rather than actually doing everything (politically) in relation to the Constitution. Americans usually revert back to old historic documents like this that built the foundation to our country when in doubt with the government. Instead of discussing whole issues about the government usually the party in office (currently Democrat) is targeted. So now the Republicans are giving the people “what they want” by going back to historic meaningful documents to reassure the feeling of security in this country and our government.

The Health Care Reform was and is currently one of the most talked about issues in government. A new Health Care Reform bill was passed and was expected to solve problems and put the country at least at a small stand still point but wasn’t as successful as planned. The Reform actually affected unemployment and cost a lot of money putting our country deeper in debt. With these negative attributes alone government was already trying to get the reform voted out (President Obama will most likely sign against this), and over with because of the overturning response the country gave. But however, what if the reform actually could work and it just wasn’t going to be as sudden as expected? Possibly if the government tried working with the new Health Care Reform bill for a while instead of immediately acting to the slight negativity it has put upon the United States debt, then there could be a greater outcome than what’s currently taking place now.

Reading the Constitution on the House floor was a genuine gesture as well as a political stunt. I feel as if reading the whole Constitution was a waste of time when there could have been a brief meeting about the most important factors of the Constitution. Yes, it was a reminder of what needs to be token care of but that was time that could have been used to actually discuss the many issues.
The cartoon on Health Care relates to the article because it represents the meaning of the United States Health Care issue today. Health Care has a lot to do with the unemployment rate and it was said not to be debated in the year 2011. The cartoon symbolizes the reform that was made. I feel as if Health Care is being avoided and needs to be discussed because it is a very important factor in our country.

I think that the reading of the constitution could have been a genuine gesture, I wouldn’t Know. I feel that the republican’s intent was to show that the constitution is the foundation of this country and that is what they must uphold. The constitution is set in stone of what is expected of the government and that Shouldn't change.
To me the cartoon is basically saying to the republicans “don’t knock it until you try it”. At least see what the health reform does for the country before you write it off or criticize in disapproval...-Kaashif

  52. 1) I think reading the constitution on the house floor was both a genuine gesture and a political stunt. A genuine gesture because I think reading the constitution out loud was done to remind everyone of its words. And a political stunt by the Republicans to sort of put the Democrats in their place.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 1. I think it was a political stunt because they had just got elected into office and they want to prove to the democrats that they are going to change things up while they are in office. I also don’t think it was necessary to read all of the words of the constitution it is over 4,000 words they should have read the important parts of it to express the message they are trying to send.
    2. The cartoon means that one party doesn’t think the health reform will work, but the other party wants to give it a try and is trying to convince the other party to pass it and see if it works. I think they should try it out and see if it works or let the people vote on it and see what the outcome is.

  54. 1.The reading of the constitution on the House floor could have been made into making into a genuine gustier, but seemed more like it was more of a political stunt because they was were trying to get more of a publicity from the people. They read the whole constitution of 4thouand and some words on the house floor just to make the people go for what they want things to go or what they want to say.
    2. The picture I think is showing the two parties fighting over the bill like the man carrying the present or the health bill reform is one who doesn’t believe in the bill or rejects the bill from happening. The other guy believes in the bill so he tells how it works for like in the picture the guy didn’t open the bill and said it didn’t work but the guy in the other side said maybe if he tried to open it, it would work better. So I think that the picture is showing how the two parties are fighting over it but in a cartoonish way.

  55. 1.I can’t really say if the reading of the Constitution was a stunt or not. The action did get attention, but at the same time it seems like they were really strict about the reading. I’m not sure why they would dedicate so much time and to recite it if it was just a political stunt. There are a lot more things they could do for attention, but reciting the Constitution isn’t something crazy, and seems like a sensible idea, even though it takes time.
2.Like our class reading, the comic dealt with the health care reform and the Republicans. In the comic it looks like the republicans are returning the reform, which is wrapped like a present, and complaining that it doesn’t work. But the person at the returns booth, who looks like Uncle Sam, says that they could have at least opened it, so it’s like saying that the republicans didn’t give the health care reform a chance, and they didn’t see if it could work.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 1. I think that, by them reading the constitution they were pulling off a political stunt, because why did they need to read the whole thing if there constitution members. And also I think they were just doing it to get support.
    2. The picture stands for that the republicans and telling the Democrats that there plan didn’t work at all, but the democrats are saying they never gave them a chance.

  57. I think that reading the constitution is an important thing to do because some people havent been doing exadctly what the constitution wants them to be and I believe that its a political stunt also because this probally recieved a lot of publicity and maybe congress wanted people to know what the constitution because most people have not even seen the constitution. I think my cartoon signals that the health reform doesnt work because it is the present and it said "this piece of junk doesnt work". I believe that the health reform is a controversey because some people like it and most people dont so we will see what happens in the future.

Reading the constriction out loud on the floor I believe was a political stunt, because it’s not like people would go against the constitution. If it was just a genuine gesture then why haven’t they ‘done it earlier. In this video it was said that, the tea party hasn’t been forgotten. I believe that strict reading of the constitution. No one is against constitution. So it would be harder to go against it.
I believe that the picture means that the republicans are trying to get rid of the health care reform. Saying that it doesn’t work, but the democrats are trying to give it a chance. A chance that the republicans aren’t willing to, because it is too costly.

    ReplyDelete
  59. 1.) Today was the first time for the house of congress to have more republicans than democrats. I believe that the republicans are pulling a political stunt on democrats. The republicans are trying to take over the house and convince the democrats to let them take over the Health Care plan. So the republicans plan to read the constitution to persuade the democrats to follow what the constitution says and do what’s best for the for the Health Care plan.
2.) In the cartoon the republicans are telling the democrats that their idea of the health care plan is not the best thing and that they should let them follow the constitution and let them take over. On the other hand the democrats are telling the republicans that they didn’t even give the plan a chance to see if the plan would work.

  60. I think the reading of the constitution on the house floor was a political stunt. They were doing it in order to gain support; it was no use for them to read it. They already knew the constitution well enough and them reading it was just for the democrats to recognize that they were going to change. Reading it was just a good way to kick off the beginning of congress and to prove how much the constitution meant to them. Some people think the reading of the constitution was sincere but others beg to differ. The cartoon I think means that the bill for free Healthcare wasn’t put into full affect and wasn’t reviewed and analyzed carefully to the point where it would have been highly effective. Many people agreed with the healthcare bill and they all supported it but due to the expenses that came with it, it quickly became just another false promise made by another president.

  61. 1) I feel that the reading of the Constitution on the House floor was a political stunt. The Republicans are jus putting up a front, everyone knows the constitution, so why read aloud for two hours? They just wanted to show the Democrats that they were in the house. It was also to show the Tea
party Activist that they hadn't forgot about them.

2)The cartoon was saying that havent even gave the Health Care plan a chance before they are trying to reject it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think that reading the Constitution on the House floor was a genuine thing, even though it seemed weird that they would take two hours of their time to do so. They wanted to remind everyone exactly what it states, because this is a very important document for the US and is not open for interpretation.

In the cartoon, the elephant/republican is carrying a box labeled 'Health Reform' saying "This piece of junk doesn't work!" While the democrat says "You might've tried OPENING it..." I think that the cartoon is saying that the Republicans aren't giving the Health Care reform a chance; they are just trying to get rid of it because it doesn't sound like it will work. The democrats are saying that republicans don't actually know if it will work and they should wait and see if it works or not before trying to get rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. 1. I think it is a genuine gesture. I believe that it is a genuine gesture because they would probably want to make sure every one understands what the constitution says. Also because they would probably want the people to understand why they are doing the things they are doing with the government. I can tell by the video is because he said they want to read it out loud on the house floor and it would probably take 3 hours. If it was a stunt I don't believe that they would read the constitution if it would take that long they would probably do something else. Also he mentioned that nobody is against the constitution, but nobody really knows what the constituion reads; therefor, nobody can really be against it or agree with it.
    2. I think that the comic is ment to say that the republicans want to repeal the heath care bill but don't even know if it will work or not. Because in the comic the person carrying the box says that the thing inside the box doesn't work but the person at the return desk says that since he didn't open it how can he know if it does or not.

    ReplyDelete
  64. 1) I think reading the constitution was a political stunt. The reason i say this is because there was no reason to read the constitution. And from the video it looks as if they took it as some kind of poorly played joke.
    2) I think the cartoon relates to what we where talking about in class because it shows that the two parties are discussing issues that could help or damage the economy. In the cartoon it shows the democrats "present" And you see the republicans returning the present and not looking inside. So this cartoon shows that the democrats proposed the health care plan but the republican’s don’t want to even look into the plan.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 1) I believe that the Republicans are just pulling the wool over our eyes. They replaced many of the Democrats in office and they want to get on the good side of the people. Reading the Constitution many make them look goody goody but that is just how they are going about getting what they want. I don't think there is any deception or foul play, but it gives then a good image and makes them more likeable.
    2) The elephant returning the health reform signifies the Republican's doubt that the health care bill will work.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 1) I think that reading the Constitution on the House floor-all 4543 words was both a genuine gesture and a political stunt. It was mostly a genuine gesture because the republicans have a strong belief or tenet in less government and adheres to the constitution. According to Mr. Chris Cillizza in the video, pocket constitutions were used as staples to tea party rallies across the nation. I think the republicans were just trying to reinforce their views of what they stand for so that maybe people would pay more attention to their doctrines of a political party as a whole and also keep remembrance of the constitutional laws that we must abide by. I also think they were being a little bit over-the-top. They didn’t necessarily have to read the whole entire thing. Many Americans have access to the constitution. The House members could read; I am assuming since they stand on high level political power. They have access to the constitution and so does many Americans. They could have simply read the main key points they deemed necessary for reinforcement. They wasted two hours reading the whole constitution when they could have been doing something worthwhile like coming up with new ideas and/or concepts.

    2) The issues that I have observed from the cartoon are the issues pertaining to the health care reform bill that was passed not too long ago. Our group discussed this in great detail yesterday. The republican elephant that is holding the gift wrapped all nicely in a bow is the health reform and the personified elephant is in the process of returning it, claiming it “a piece of junk that doesn’t work.” The return guy (democrat) is trying to convince the elephant (republican) to maybe open it before you try to even return it. Most republicans want to rebuke the Health reform before they even try to accept it or try it out because it is another government program they just don’t want. They want less government control. They also can’t claim it is a piece of junk without testing it out and seeing if it actually is working for the American people. You can’t be quick to return or repeal something unless you tested it out and definitely know, it’s just not going to work. Republicans and Democrats need to be more accepting of different ideas or concepts that the opposing party comes up with. If it’s something that is needed and has more advantages than disadvantages, then why not accept it? Maybe the republicans should propose another solution, or better yet, work together to form a better solution.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think that the reading of the constitution on the House Floor was a political stunt. I think this because why would anyone want to waste their time reading 4,543 words? Also I thought that it was no use of really reading it when all the people that live in the House already should know it. The comic was about what is happening in the world with the health care stuff. It is making it an joke but it is truly about it.

  68. adrian johnson 1. I feel that reading the constitution on the house floor was a genuine gesture. I also feel that it was a political stunt. The genuine gesture part about it assured the tea party that they have not forgotten their rights. I think everyone in the house is very familiar with the constitution, and has not forgotten the tea party’s rights. I also think the tea party themselves should know their own rights and know when they are being ignored.
    2. The political cartoon its self is explaining that healthcare itself isn’t worth what they say it is. They guy returning it hasn’t even opened it yet. The man he is returning it to explains to him he hasn’t even opened it. That’s tells you that it isn’t even worth opening it

    ReplyDelete
  69. 1) The republicans were not doing this as a remembrance but as a hide insult. Republicans became rebels since president Obama has been elected. Not passing anything Obama has that will help our country improve. The republicans have been passing such gestures since the new passing of health care. Representative Joe Wilson yelled out “You Lie!” during Obama’s health care speech. Obama was just explaining how the health care plan will help the American citizens. If Mr. Wilson wanted to do what’s best for his people, he would have sat back quietly and clapped his pants off. Ex-president George Bush had also made hidden remarks to Obama saying “Well little buddy asked for it” in a new report. Really the republicans have disrespected not just the United people but the constitution. Our four fathers wrote that document to say what the United States of America is about; the republicans used it as a joke. There were always a president of republic in office now there is democrat in office; no more free rides, down for republicans up for democrats.
    2) This cartoon makes me laugh so hard. It shows just how ignorant the Republican Party is, not even trying to look at the benefits that the health care plan has. With the new health care plan, most republicans would have to cut down on some of their need things. Now they want to cancel the health care plan now that it’s passed. Do the republicans really care for the United States or theirsevels? I guess we are no better than them since most of us voted for them. Personally I know certain people not just family members but people out in the community. They rather be sick and wait it off then to go to a doctor or hospital paying fees they can’t afford. We as a people said that we are here for each other in any way. It’s almost saying that it depend on what the cause is if we do. At war with another country we stay strong together and president dies we stand as a country. If we need something to help us stay strong, our represent ivies say “YOU LIE!” just shows even more of a nation we are. I have faith in my president. Some many have it because of race purpose, but he has great ideas with ways to improve our nation only IF the republic will allow it. I want to leave with this question in mind; why are we called United States when no represents us well.

  70. Well I believe that the American dream to people starts in the United States. Because United States is one of the richest countries and has a lot of opportunities people describe it as the American dream. The American dream to people is a better life for example: better jobs, education, more money etc. basically more opportunities. Well to me the dream act means looking for a better life and a lot of opportunities. Therefore one of the greatest opportunity is education have the right to learn. Therefore that’s why many students and parents migrate to the United States looking for a better life for them and their family which is the “American Dream or also known as Spanish “El Sueno Americano”.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The American Dream has always been changed and I heard a lot of them. Some peoples change it in their mind to represent goals like the American Dream is to buy a new car and stuff. Throughout history though, the American Dream has been a wide variety of things. Before the housing value started going down, the American Dream was to own a house. Now it’s to sell your house for more than you bought it or to just sell your house. I think the American Dream is to do good in school and get a good job that I love to do.

  72. Well I think that the influence for people to vote is that they want a leader and they want their side to have more votes than the other side, so they can vote for the election. One reason that I voted because I am a person that is really interested and involve in politics, government, and all that. “Yes” there were some people that did not vote and that’s called apathy which means a lack of interested which that is harmful for the elections. I believe that all people that are electorate and have the opportunity to choose their leader should do it, but as we all know each person has a different prospective.
